Dabble 25: Bonding Brothers

Featuring Kurama, Merrow, Clive

Dabble 25: Bonding Brothers

Over a hill in the middle of the night, three furs laid in the grass, the riverbed only a few feet from them. With the town quiet, the water calm, and the stars in the sky still, the fox, the wolf, and the cat took a deep breath.

“What do you two wanna do when we’re older?” Kurama the fox asked.

“I’ve been giving that a lot of thought…” Merrow said, putting his hands behind his head. “I want to be an adventurer like all the stories I’ve read about.” His eyes studied the stars and then into the distance. “Can you imagine the stories I could make if I went out into the world? What wonders I could discover. The thought is thrilling,” he said, wagging his tail.

“I don’t know,” Clive the black cat responded. “Before, when I was adopted, my guardians always told me to focus on one thing and get good at it. Then I’ll never have to worry about living a normal life again.”

Clive sat up and leaned his head on his knees. “As long as I have good food and a place to sleep, I’m okay with anything really.”

“What about you Kurama?” Merrow asked.

“I want to learn magic,” he said. “I know there’s a way to learn it even though I know I wasn’t born with it. It’s just so cool though.”

“I don’t think I have an aptitude for magic,” Merrow said. “I’ll stick to weapons and armor. Though, if they were enchanted to help protect me, I wouldn’t complain. Maybe you could learn some enchantment magic?” He suggested.

“I don’t like magic,” Clive said. “It’s way too confusing and takes more time to learn. If I’m going to use anything, it’s my fists and the clothes I can carry on my back,” he stated.

“That’s fine,” Kurama said. “Actually, that’s perfect! I can be the mage, Merrow, you can be the warrior, and Clive, you can be the support.” He flicked his ear and thought about it. “Naw, you need a better title than support. Not tank either.”

“Monk maybe? Brawler? Mediator?” Merrow chimed in and Clive chuckled a little.

“I don’t need a proper title, the support of the party works,” Clive said.

“Then it’s settled, when we’re older, we’ll go on the wildest adventure ever!” Kurama said with confidence. “I’ll learn the best spells around, Merrow will be the best warrior in all the land, and Clive will be the best brawling supporter ever!”

The three of them shared a laugh as the name needed work but they agreed.

“Then we need a name for our group,” Clive said.

“That’s a good point. I think it’s too early though because we don’t really know what kind of adventure we’ll go on or what our individual talents are,” Merrow said.

“We got plenty of time to figure that out. Right now, I think a midnight snack is in order.”
